Essential
Oils
When we peel an orange, walk through a rose or herb garden and rub a sprig of lavender, rosemary or sage between our fingers, we experience the distinct scent of the particular plant. But what exactly do we smell? Generally speaking, what we are smelling are the essential oils of the plant. These essential oils give herbs and spices their specific scent and flavor, flowers and fruit their perfume. Aromatic oils can be found in various parts of a plant, these parts include the bark, seeds, leaves, roots, flowers, wood, balsam and resin. For example, the Bitter Orange tree produces orange essential oil from the fruit peel; petitgrain essential oil from the leaves and twigs; and neroli essential oil from the orange blossoms. The Clove tree generates different types of essential oil from its buds, stalks and leaves, whereas the Scotch pine yields distinct oils from its needles, wood and resin. Essential oils are highly concentrated and a little goes a long way, if you are intending to use essential oils on your skin - you should first dilute the essential oil with a carrier oil (such as, sweet almond oil, grapeseed oil, apricot kernel oil). Keep in mind that Essential oils are not the same as Fragrance oils. Where essential oils are derived from the true plants, perfume oils are artificially created fragrances or contain artificial substances and do not offer the therapeutic benefits that essential oils offer. Our Essential Oils are 100% pure and unadulterated. Sources for Natural Plant Origins from "The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Essential Oils" By Julia Lawless.
