Herbs & Botanicals in our Natural Handmade Soaps

Annatto Seed Bixa orellana comes from a small flowering shrub in Central America and has large, pink flowers that look like roses. A red coloring made from the pulp around the seeds of this plant was used by the Mayan Civilization as a dye. The seeds and pulp are separated from the fruit, they contain the carotenoid bixin, which in soap turn shades of orange and yellow. Additionally, annatto seed is a naturally emollient, and produces an extremely rich, creamy lather when used in handmade soap. You will find Annatto Seed in our Sweet Orange Aromatherapy Soap.

Lavender Lavandula officinalis has an aroma that conjures memories of other times and other places. Lavender's name derives from the Latin verb "to wash", and both the Romans and Greeks used this aromatic herb in their soaps and bathwater. Aromatherapists use Lavender to treat restlessness and insomnia. Clinical research has shown that smelling Lavender actually causes the brain to release endorphins, and increases alpha waves in the back of the head – both of which are associated with a greater state of relaxation. You will find Lavender in our Morning Mint, Lavender Oakmoss, Lavender Rosemary, Love Blend, MoonTime & Summer Time Soaps.

Peppermint Mentha piperita is thought to be a hybrid between spearmint and water mint. Peppermint is a natural herb used since ancient times. The Romans and Greeks used mint in some of their sacred rites. It was highly regarded for medicinal purposes.  Menthol, the main constituent in mints, has antibacterial properties, and is used externally in liniments to stimulate nerve endings and increase local blood flow. You will find Peppermint in our Morning Mint Soap.

Rosemary’s Rosemarinus officinalis name is derived from the Latin word Rosmarinus, which means “dew of the sea”. There is much folklore surrounding this natural herb, including the centuries old belief that “where Rosemary flourishes, the woman rules”. In ancient Greece, students believed that wearing rosemary garlands in their hair would improve their memory, hence the saying "Rosemary is for Remembrance." Besides the legends, superstitions, and historic uses, Rosemary is best known as a symbol of remembrance, friendship, and love. Rosemary has many medicinal uses. You will find Rosemary in our Morning Mint and Lavender Rosemary soaps.
